We here at ACS strive to bring you complete coverage of everything Android as well as anything that is Android related Whether it be from the latest incarnation of hacking, technology you gotta have or even products, like Agloves, that you can’t live without. With that said, let me jump right into my review of Agloves. –
As we settle in to some of the coldest months of the year, at least in my neck of the woods, you begin to realize how many things you can and cannot do with extra articles of clothing on. You also learn that operating touch screen device becomes almost impossible while trying to keep your extremities from falling off. If you have experienced this irritation, then let me tell you of a product I discovered while trying to solve this issue for myself and my wife.
For a while now I have known of products that you can apply to your own gloves or even gloves with built-in conductive patches in the fingers. These products either fall off after a short use or the limited use of a small patch eventually turns into more of an annoyance and hindrance than it is worth. After searching far and wide I finally stumbled upon Aglove’s website, Agloves.com. I was greeted by a nicely designed website and an instant image of a product that claims to work with my touch screen devices all while looking like a normal glove.
As I dug deeper into the website and read all of their claims as well as the numerous links to product reviews, I began to see that the product I am looking at it something different. It is possibly the product that would solve my wintertime woes. However, I am a born skeptic and just couldn’t believe that this product actually works. I thought to myself, “Look at it; it looks like just every other pair of simple cotton gloves that I own. This is probably a sham.” With that skepticism in mind, I contacted the company and requested an interview with someone.
Little did I know; I would be granted an interview the head honcho herself. The person that invented the gloves and the mastermind behind the gloves’ success, Ms. Jennifer Spencer. Ms. Spencer also sent me a pair of gloves to review so I could be prepared for my interview. While I was waiting on my gloves to arrive in the mail, I still held a skeptical view of the product. I figured it would be a failure and then my interview with Ms. Spencer would be awkward and hopefully short.
A few days after I received the conformation that they were sending me the gloves; they arrived in the mail. Of course, I opened the package up, didn’t even look at the packaging, slapped on the gloves and began pushing away on my phone. Was I ever surprised! The product actually worked. Not only did it work, but it really, really worked. Ms. Spencer had invented a product that actually worked, is desired by the masses and has a price that is right.
During our interview, I asked Ms. Spencer how she came up with the idea for the Agloves. She proceeded to tell me a story of how she went to visit her daughter in Washington, D.C. Her daughter was an intern at the time and would frequently miss calls due to the time it took to gather her phone, take off her gloves and then finally answer it.
While she was there her daughter looked at her and said, “Mom, you have got to invent gloves that work on a touch screen.” With Ms. Spencer being an inventive and creative person, she saw an opportunity and figured out a way to work it out. She used her “entrepreneurial spirit” and out came the Aglove.
Ms. Spencer began to research the problem of gloves and touchscreens by understanding the problem: and how capacitive screen works, It does not work by using pressure or heat, rather it works off of the “bio-electricity of your body.” This meant that the product needed to be able to conduct electricity from your body to the screen with no interference. Ms. Spencer knew that one of the strongest and best conductors of electricity is metal.
She worked through the metal ideas and discovered things like trying to use nickel would be a bad idea because many people are allergic to it. After, researching the metals she settled in on Silver. Which if you remember from your days back in school, the symbol on the Periodic Table is Ag. Hence, the name Agloves was born.
From the initial concept of the idea in early 2010 to launch of the website on September 29, 2010, Agloves have taken off as one of the best-selling and most useful accessories for your Android and touch screen device. By Christmas of 2010, they were selling two pairs of gloves a minute. Companies such as Verizon Wireless were reaching out to them asking for their products to sell at their stores.
I can say that this product lives up to hype given to it by others. Ever since I started using my gloves on a daily basis, I can’t believe I made it this long without them. Agloves are offered in three styles:
Agloves Original - $17.99 – (This is the pair I tested) The top-rated touchscreen glove in the USA. Classically styled for the everyday glove wearer. Looser cuff for a more sophisticated look.
Agloves Sport – $23.99 – Designed to keep you warmer on active days. A snug-fitted cuff seals the wind out, while the silver nylon traps heat in.
Agloves Bamboo - $23.99 – Their greenest glove! Knit with bamboo and silver-coated nylon. Suitable for summer, travel, indoor use or as a liner.
If you have ever found yourself in the same quandary as myself or Ms. Spencer’s daughter, I highly recommend that you order yourself a pair of the Agloves. If that plus the wonderful story of how a product is born doesn’t stir you to purchase these, let me feed you this little tidbit, especially for our Android die-hards.
The green that you see used throughout Agloves website and marketing material is not a coincidence, a conscious decision was made to reach out the users of Android devices, thus the incorporation of one of our favorite colors. Someone recognizing the Android community is something that many companies need to think about and I am glad Ms. Spencer and her company made that decision.
Just to wrap up our review and give you a little more insight into Ms. Spencer, I asked her a series of ten either/or questions. Here are her answers:
Tennis shoes or Flip-Flops?
Dog or Cat?
Coke or Pepsi?
Vampires or Zombies?
Dancing or Singing?
Tall or Short?
Fly or Drive?
Ketchup or Mayonnaise?
The Notebook or Titanic?
The Price is Right or Wheel of Fortune?
Be sure to read daily as we will be announcing contest for someone to win a pair of Agloves.
