For the past week I have been testing the Android App, Droid of the Day. The app is, in simple terms, an app market with user reviews and recommendations, however the app is much much more. When I started using the app, I figured this would be another generic T & E, military speak for Test and Evaluation. I was impressed early in testing with all the features. The app allows you to surf user recommend apps, which I will address later.
The app is packed with handy features, such as a Share button, a simple “like/ dislike” button to rate the app. No need to type up long personal comments for others to wade through. The user interface was extremely easy to navigate and self-explanatory. The app reads your current installed apps and allows you to recommend your favorite installed apps.

And what app would be complete without a history button? Droid of the Day has just that which allows easy navigating to previous apps. The history isn’t some lame selection either. The history contains quality apps rated by the users themselves.

The app is free in Google Play. Run, don’t walk there now and grab a copy. The dev is providing a great app and service for FREE. You can show him some love by making a donation. 

Now back to my opening paragraph. Remember I’m the ideas guy, not the dev. This app has potential and I would like to see it evolve into something more. Say a read state which reads all my installed apps and compares them with other uses and makes recommendations using analytics.

HINTS FOR EXISTING USERS:
Enable ‘Auto Update’ for DOTD – this app is updated regularly (about every 3 weeks). It is recommended that you select auto-update to ensure everything works as expected.
DOTD MUST BE UPDATED – This app will not function properly if you are not updating. You will know when it is not working, as the app will show you that, and provide a link to download the update from the Android Market.
IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS, PLEASE ENSURE YOU HAVE THE LATEST VERSION OF THE APP INSTALLED, THIS WILL FIX 90% OF ALL ISSUES
The reason there are no ads, is that I don’t do this to make money. This is done for fun, and to highlight Android developers that are producing great products. I don’t sell the apps we recommend, don’t have a direct connection to any of the apps, or companies featured, and don’t receive any sort of compensation whatsoever.

PERMISSION:
The reasons we use each PERMISSION are listed:
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED – We re-register the Notification when the phone is rebooted (in the background, after the phone has completed it’s other boot tasks).
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE and INTERNET – Sync data down and up (also used for Google Analytics)
WAKE_LOCK – Ensures the notifications are sent reliably
!!!!!!IMPORTANT: Not all apps will show up in searches on some phones!!!!!!!
Due to carrier limitations (AT&T in US is particularly bad), Android OS version, phone hardware, Country, and other factors – not all apps will show up every day. (The Android Market will report that the app cannot be found). This is a Android Market limitation, and not a problem with DOTD!
