Cracks in the iOS Superiority Myth

Based on a recent large (25,000) survey of smartphone users, Forbes is reporting a crack in the iOS superiority myth. The survey found that functionality is the largest buying point even among those who do succumb to the fruity OS. The survey from CivicScience.com speaks of many lessons learned.

As seen in the chart above, OS is not the most important factor in what leads consumers to buy a certain family of smartphone. In fact, more people buy Android because of Android than buy the itoys because of iOS. So this begs the question: “What are the other driving forces behind device purchasing?”

They are as follows: Functionality, Price, and Manufacturer. This shows that Android has largely gained its market share by pricing, due to the breadth of carriers and price points of devices Android phones are available on a plan and budget for almost anyone while Apple devices continue to carry a price premium. However, Apple still claims the largest slice of the decision process pie as a manufacturer, more iOS buyers bought solely based on the Apple brand than any other smartphone. Clearly Android still has ground to make up with manufacturers creating strong brand equity.

But the biggest factor is still functionality. Many people are choosing Android simply for its flexibility. As many have often said: “Need a more secure email client? Download one! Need a bigger keyboard? Download one!” Android offers you these choices, and more. Many buyers clearly see the utility in that, and an OS that allows this ecosystem gives the consumer a feeling that their device can grow with them, independent of OS updates. In this Android has no equal.

Hold your head high Android, you are still the choice of the buyer who wants, well, choice!
