Microsoft has announced a duo of tablets name Surface. The self manufactured tablets will come in two flavors, one running Windows 8 RT with ARM architecture, and one running Windows 8 Pro with x86 architecture.
The tablets will weigh in at 1.5lb and 1.9lb respectively. The casing is made of a material Microsoft calles “VaporMg”, a magnesium composite. The RT flavor comes in at only 9.3mm thick, though the Pro version will sacrifice some thickness and weight.
Both tablets will come with a 10.6 inch screen and are pre-loaded with a touch optimized version of Microsoft Office. Other apps will be available for metro via the windows store, though for now the list is short, notable Netflix expects to have their app ready at launch.
The Surface tablets also have an inbuilt kickstand, with the front facing camera tilted 22 degrees to work most effectively when the stand is in use. They also have two cover style cases available, one with membrane style keys and a multi-touch keyboard and another with tactile keys that comes in a good bit thicker.
As far as storage, the ARM version will offer 32GB and 64GB flavors with the x86 version stepping it up to 128GB on the high end. They also sport full size USB ports, which should work not only with peripherals, but flash drives and media card readers, giving you even greater utility on the go.
All these features combined make the Surface with Windows 8 Pro a viable netbook/laptop replacement for the majority of users. Those looking for more sleek on the go use can opt for the ARM variant and still have a very capable device in their arsenal.
